At York TMS Clinic, we provide FDA-cleared Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS Therapy) with NeuroStar for people who have not found relief with antidepressants. Our approach is non-invasive, personalized, and focused on helping you feel like yourself again.*
NeuroStar uses transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to focus on specific areas of the brain that tend to be less active in people with depression. It is not ECT or electroconvulsive therapy.
While the exact cause of depression is still not fully known, the leading scientific theory is that it results from an imbalance in the brain’s neurotransmitters, the chemical messengers that carry signals between brain cells.
During a NeuroStar treatment session, a magnet similar in strength to the one used in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine is used to stimulate nerve cells in the area of the brain believed to regulate mood. These magnetic pulses can positively influence the brain’s neurotransmitter activity, which may help support long term remission.
Treatment with NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is simple:
With more than three million treatments delivered, this innovative approach to remission is giving new hope to people every day.
Here’s what to expect during a NeuroStar Advanced Therapy (TMS) session:
Before treatment
You will relax in a comfortable treatment chair while a small curved magnetic coil is gently placed against your head.
During treatment
NeuroStar delivers precise magnetic pulses to the targeted areas of the brain. You will hear a clicking sound and feel a light tapping on your scalp.
After treatment
Based on your doctor’s recommendation, each NeuroStar Advanced Therapy session lasts between 19 and 37 minutes. You can return to normal activities right away. Since the treatment does not affect memory or alertness, you are able to drive yourself to and from your appointments.
NeuroStar TMS therapy is typically done in office, five days a week, for about four to six weeks, with each session lasting 19 to 37 minutes*.
Self-pay and financing options available upon request. We also accept medical financing options such as CareCredit and Advance Care Card.

Individuals in York may not be familiar with NeuroStar Advanced TMS Therapy. You may want answers to your questions before you decide to undergo treatment.
Transcranial magnetic stimulation, often referred to as TMS is a noninvasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of depression. TMS is typi-cally used when antidepressant medications haven’t been effective, have ceased working, or as an alternative to medication.
TMS involves delivering magnetic pulses to specific parts of the brain.
A typical initial course of treatment is about 19-37 minutes daily over 4-6 weeks.
A vast majority of commercial and Medicare plans have recognized the effectiveness of treating de-pression with TMS Therapy and now cover TMS as part of their plans.
TMS does not circulate in the blood throughout the body, so it does not have side effects like weight gain, sexual dysfunction, nausea, dry mouth, sedation, etc. The most common side effects reported during clinical trials were headache and scalp discomfort —generally mild to moderate—occurring less frequently after the first week of treatment.
No. TMS Therapy involves a unique method of using pulsed magnetic fields for a therapeutic benefit. The intensity of the magnetic field is similar to that of an MRI. These techniques differ radically from the popular use of low intensity, static magnetic fields. Those products deliver weak and undirected static fields that are not capable of activating brain cells. The activation and stimulation of brain cells is a key part of why TMS is so effective.
